BUDDHISM: IS IT JUST FOR LOSERS?
|
SYNOPSIS: Framed as a support group meeting for those who ‘think too much’, a self-confessed analysis junkie dramatically reconstructs a tortuous train of thought, en-route to a mid-life epiphany. Encounters with ‘Non-Sense therapy’ seemingly cure him of his addiction, but lead to a crippling dependency on idiotic behaviour. Provocative, intelligent and entertaining, the show wrestles with grand themes through amusing and colourful means. "Understanding is the Booby Prize*"
Partly Inspired by the words of Werner Erhard*, this 'poststructuralist Zen clown show’ is around and about how the language we use creates the world as we know it. Erhard was the founder of est training, which later developed into Landmark Education. I can see how this show might appear to parody elements of Landmark courses, and of course, Buddhism too. To me, however, the aim of the piece is not at all disparaging, but aims to express that zen sense of humour that tickles at attachment to any conceptual masterplan. Language creates the world as we know it, not as it is, which is why 'understanding is the booby prize'. Having participated in several Landmark courses I would recommend them to anyone.
